Behind the Design: Tough Revolver Tee
Share
The true spark for this shirt design came from Lana Del Rey’s recent collaboration with Quavo on the song “Tough.” The lyric “like a .38 made out of brass… tough” struck a chord with me, planting the seed for this concept. The decision to depict a gun on the shirt was solidified by Lana’s post-Grammys photo, where she posed with a handgun. Despite her past anti-gun sentiments, this image gave me the confidence to incorporate a firearm into the design, reflecting her nuanced relationship with this imagery.
Lana Del Rey and Firearms in Her Music
Lana Del Rey has a long history of referencing firearms in her music, dating back to her early days as Lizzy Grant. Her songs often blend glamour with a hint of danger, creating a unique aesthetic. In 2019, she released “Looking for America,” envisioning a country free from guns and violence—a poignant response to the nation's ongoing struggle with mass shootings. This song marked a shift, showcasing her evolving perspective on firearms.
Lana’s work encapsulates this duality: the allure of danger in her earlier references and the critical stance in “Looking for America.” This complex relationship is what I aimed to capture in my design.
Design Choices and Symbolism
To steer clear of the negative connotations associated with modern handguns, I chose a decorative, vintage-inspired revolver. Revolvers, rarely linked to contemporary violence, evoke a sense of history and nostalgia.
The revolver in this design is hand-drawn, taking inspiration from the intricate engravings on historical firearms. These embellishments elevate the gun from a mere weapon to a piece of art. To connect it further to Lana’s aesthetic, I incorporated rose and flower motifs into the engraving. This adds a layer of softness and femininity, while maintaining an edge of toughness.
Balancing Toughness with Delicacy
The goal of this design was to balance the toughness of a gun with the delicacy of floral engravings, mirroring Lana Del Rey’s style where beauty often conceals deeper, sometimes darker themes. The vintage revolver with floral engravings creates a harmony that reflects Lana’s unique blend of strength and vulnerability.
In conclusion, this shirt design pays tribute to Lana Del Rey’s intricate relationship with firearms, capturing the duality of strength and beauty that defines her work. It tells a story of nostalgia, artistic expression, and a longing for a more peaceful world, embodying the layered narrative Lana weaves through her music. This design balances opposing forces to create something truly compelling and thought-provoking.
